Heritage

2010 marks the centenary of two important landmarks in Neilston’s history; that of the infamous Crofthead Mill Strike and the last major history written on Neilston (Dr Pride’s “History of the Parish of Neilston” available in Neilston Library). Neilston cannot let this occasion go by and NDT will have a programme of events to celebrate this anniversary.

As a community organisation NDT values Neilston’s heritage and the built environment. It is important to raise public awareness and perceptions; one of the ways we can do this is through creating a greater sense of identity with the area through historical projects. There is a rich story to be told of Neilston, but not enough people are aware of it.

The first project which NDT will run will be and oral history project which aims to collect and archive the memories of people living in Neilston today. NDT will work alongside local primary schools and other groups in the village.

The Walking Theatre Company has received Heritage Lottery Funding to create pieces in 5 communities in Scotland open of these lucky communities is Neilston. The Walking Theatre Company will create a new piece to celebrate the 1910 Mill strikes as well as several smaller projects in the lead up to this. One of these projects will be working with NDT and the primary schools on workshops to celebrate the children’s heritage and storytelling.
