‘First the life, then the spaces, then the buildings. Professor Jan Gehl .
Jan Gehl is an architect who has spent his life looking at the kinds of places that people like to be in. Very often it’s as simple as a bench on the sunny side of the street where you can stop to chat, sometimes it’s matter of making the traffic behave better. What Jan has found out is that architects’ visions, however grand, are worthless without people inhabiting them, bringing life in. So, instead of thinking about buildings first, we should think of how people use space, first and foremost. First the life, then the spaces…
Taking our inspiration from this, we have gone a step further. Is it possible to explore, develop and celebrate the LIFE of the village – social, cultural, economic – in order to inform and give life to the physical plans we make? So that the life itself is enriched in that process.
