Neilston Community Windfarm

Community resilience - human and financial resources for the long term- is the name of the game in these hard pressed times. For some communities, ownership of renewable energy offers this prospect. Seeing the potential of Neilston's hilltop location, NDT was introduced to Carbon Free Developments and invited them into dicussions.

Fast forward to March 2012, when Neilston Development Trust, with its joint venture partner Carbon Free Developments, concluded a deal with the Coop Bank, private investors and social lenders to finance and build the £15.6m Neilston Community Windfarm. This Limited Liability Partnership is the first of its kind in Scotland.

4 large turbines (110m high), SW of Neilston, will have a maximum output of 10MW, (roughly equivalent to twice Neilston's electricity consumption). The electricity goes into the grid, contributing to Scotland's national targets for green energy.

Over its 25-year life the windfarm will deliver millions of pounds to support the long-term sustainability and development of the village, in local control.

It took a year for NDT volunteers to secure loans to finance a 28% stake. These loans have to be repaid over the first 10 years, but even so there will be a substantial amount in gift-aided funds paid out for projects during that time. And then, much more.
