THE BANK: a ‘living room’ for the village
In 2006, NDT acquired the former Clydesdale Bank branch in Main Street under Community Right to Buy provisions (See full account in ARCHIVE). It was fully run by volunteers until, with major refurbishment and funding complete, it reopened in December 2011. There are two community spaces on the ground floor; first floor houses the Trust’s offices, and two rented spaces, including the HQ for Neilston First Responders. Back and front, the garden is lovingly tended by our gardening volunteers, and the Bike Hub is out back, carefully disguised in a collection of sheds and containers, with NDT Cycling’s colourful electric van plugged in – a busy spot!
The Bank Café has been a joyful addition to village life for many years. The café space is shared by groups and meetings and needs some refurbishment so just at present (April 2019) we’re taking a pause to look at how to use the Bank spaces in the very best way. We’ll keep you posted of proposals and welcome your ideas for uses of the space that best meet local need and demand. However, we all miss the café (and that coffee!) and everything goes off better when there’s food around. With nutrition and health never far from the news (and grub never far from our thoughts!) we’re looking at creative ways to bring food back into the Bank programme and helping to make Scotland a Good Food Nation. Scones, sourdough, soup …. Pizza anyone? Check out GET Local and watch for Bank programme info on WHAT’S ON.
